Kevin Moore, 6th Grade Teacher, Lincoln Elementary School

Mr. Moore joined the Mount Vernon City School District staff in 1997 as science coordinator at Graham Elementary School. He served in that role for 14 years before transferring to Lincoln Elementary School where he currently works as a 6th grade teacher. In addition to his role as an educator, Mr. Moore served as the coordinator for the Mount Vernon City School District Science Fair for six years.

In 2008, Mr. Moore began an eight-year relationship with City Year New York when he participated in Young Heroes – a leadership, role model, and community service program funded by City Year. Mr. Moore and the 6th grade students at Graham Elementary took a bus three Saturdays a month from January to May to engage in community service with students from MS 204 in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx.

Since transferring to Lincoln Elementary School, Mr. Moore has continued his involvement with City Year by leading the Young Heroes Program at Lincoln. Mr. Moore and his students volunteer at a soup kitchen three times a week, at the Wartburg Home two Saturdays each month, and they do three Midnight Runs for the homeless in N.Y.C. Lincoln students complete between 80 – 100 service hours during the academic year through community service projects with City Year New York.

“Being involved with City Year has been and continues to be one of the most amazing experiences of my teaching career, and I have had many,” said Mr. Moore.

Mr. Moore completed his undergraduate studies at Iona College in New Rochelle. Mr. Moore also continued his education at Iona, receiving a master’s degree in Education.

Mr. Moore’s vision over these past 12 years has been to develop leaders, role models, and students who are civic minded. The Moore Family started The Matthew Kevin Moore Leadership, Role Model, and Community Service Foundation in honor of their son in May 2012, after his sudden passing from a seizure. Each year Mr. Moore and his family present awards and scholarships for graduating seniors who possess these qualities from the elementary, middle, and high schools in the Mount Vernon School District, Iona College in New Rochelle, and City Year New York in New York City.
