The urban school district with about 8,000 students is the last in the Lower Hudson Valley to open its doors, and Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton acknowledged that, with COVID-19 numbers rising, it might not be for long.

The Superintendent’s Summer Reading initiative with story time read-aloud hour started this week with a stop to the Boys & Girls Club and the Mount Vernon Library. The guest readers were Mount Vernon City councilman Derrick Thompson, and from the Neighborhood Health Center, Community Health Worker Enjoli Pennamom. The kids were engaged and eager to answer questions about the books that were read. Everyone had a chance to share what they learned. We want to continue to encourage our students to use their superpower of reading, which helps them to foster a lifetime of learning.

Educating the whole child is the most important goal at Edward Williams Elementary School. Our staff includes a full-time nurse, social worker, psychologist, speech therapist, and school counselor. We also have two Reading Specialists who use the pull-out and push-in teaching system. Creative teaching strategies are used to incorporate the arts and the community into the lives of all our children. All of our 500 children are embraced daily regardless of their backgrounds or living conditions.
In addition to classroom instruction, intervention instruction is offered in all the academic areas. Many proven academic programs are offered including, resource, and special education classes. Academic intervention service programs are also available.
We boast of an after-school program that serves our students in Grades 3-6. Currently this year, we have Academic Power Hour which provides enrichment academic support Monday - Wednesday. Also, on Thursday and Friday, we have a program in collaboration with the Empire Program that exposes the students to the world of STEAM with wonderful hands-on activities.
