WHAT IS A SCHOOL COUNSELOR?
The role of the school counselor is to assist all students in academic,
career, personal, and social development. The counselor teaches classroom guidance lessons for all grade levels, engages students in
individual or small group counseling on an as-needed basis, refers students and/or parents to community resources and agencies, and provides support services for stakeholders during crisis situations.
WHAT SERVICES DOES A SCHOOL COUNSELOR PROVIDE?
· Classroom Counseling Lessons– I will provide monthly counseling lessons that will feature a theme/topic for the month. However, if you feel that your class needs more education or help with a specific topic, you can schedule a time for me to come in and do a lesson built to your classes’ needs.
· Small Group Counseling– I will provide small group counseling for students who may need assistance with making better choices, becoming better students, improving peer relations, and dealing with family issues.
· Individual Counseling– I will provide individual counseling for students who are not already receiving mandated counseling with the School Social Worker. Individual counseling will be available for students who are having difficulties dealing with emotions, relationships (both at home and at school), academic/development tasks, and those who may need more one-on–one help. Individual counseling is intended to be short term to help the student identify the problem and develop goals to take appropriate action. Any student who is in need of intense support, will be referred to a mental health agency and community services.
