Parents of the Mount Vernon City School District learned about the changes under way in the Special Education Department in a Zoom forum Wednesday, October 13, 2021. The process of determining initial eligibility for special education has been centralized which allows for closer monitoring of compliance. About 40 special education teachers have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory approach to reading.

Mount Vernon High School students were greeted in September by a new principal, Dr. Matthew Gonzales, an education leader with more than 20 years of experience, including with the International Baccalaureate program. The Mount Vernon Board of Education hired Dr. Gonzales in August to lead the school of 1,200 students. The position puts the veteran educator in charge of overseeing the high school’s new configuration, splitting the student body into three divisions named for role models and acclaimed figures – Maya Angelou, Benjamin Banneker and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Thrusha Henderson, who has built a career as an educator in the Mount Vernon City School District over the past 24 years, is the new principal of the Pennington School. She took the position starting in August after serving as assistant principal in three district schools over several years, including serving twice as an administrator shared by two schools. For the past school year, she served as assistant principal for both the Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School and Rebecca Turner Elementary School.

Welcome to new and returning Holmes families to the 2020-2021 academic school year! I hope that you and your family are safe and doing well!
During these unprecedented times, please be reminded that all schools in Mt. Vernon are beginning the school year remotely. Further decisions will be made by the Superintendent of Schools no later than October 5, 2020.
The first day of virtual schooling begins Thursday, September 10, 2020. The student Username, student ID, classroom teacher’s email, and ZOOM login information are available in the main office. Additional login information for specials and support staff will be provided on the Holmes parent page in Schoology and Seesaw.
Students will be engaged in daily synchronous (LIVE ZOOM) instruction, as well as asynchronous (Student Independent) instruction with teacher support. Students and families must remember the following ZOOM norms: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Ready to Learn.
With this being said, students must log in on time. Students and family members must be appropriately dressed. Students should have a quiet place to work, and parents must be mindful of their language and interactions in the background. Students must be organized. Grab & Go breakfast/lunch will also be available from 7:15 am – 8:15 am as needed. A schedule will be posted on the district’s website. I know this is a lot of information and a lot to take in. Know that your child’s success is our #1 priority and of utmost importance, so we will work with you every step of the way. We ask that you do your part and work with us! Keep the lines of communication open!
As we proceed throughout the school year, various updates will be provided on the following platforms: Holmes Schoology page, email address, Robocalls, and access to the Holmes and district webpage.
Please reach out to your child’s teacher and the principal at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions that you may have.
Once again, welcome, and I look forward to a very productive school year!
