They wrote about wildfires, blizzards, floods and more. But before the fourth graders in Caroline Prydal’s class at Grimes School authored their books on severe weather, they made sure they had their facts right. They made sure they conducted enough research to be able to write with authority. Poring over the internet and books on weather, they pulled together volumes that were good enough to put their names on.
The Mount Vernon City School District is looking for teaching assistants and substitute teachers. The district seeks about 20 new teaching assistants to work with special education students and is adding to the list of substitute teachers available to take classes temporarily.
Mount Vernon students received advice, encouragement and support Monday, November 22, 2021, from some 20 community members, including the current and former superintendents, a judge, the mayor, their peers and parents who lost children to violence. In a webinar that lasted more than five hours for National Stop the Violence Day, the community leaders encouraged them to focus on schoolwork, not make poor choices in anger, and turn to adults for help when needed. Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton called on them to carry the message of the day forward.
Students at Pennington School may have to wait a few years before they start the careers they dream about. But last week, they got to dress the parts. On National Career Development Day, Nov. 17, they came dressed as police officers, nurses, a zoologist, a chef, a veterinarian and an astronaut. And many others.
Elected leaders, clergy and community members visited Mount Vernon High School on Friday for Unity Day to connect with the school’s 1,500 students. The community members toured the school, greeted students and were invited into classrooms by teachers. By being present at the school, they served as examples of what success looks like and why education matters. They also showed students that they were supported.
